What hangar structures that you have supplied and installed in recent months?
The latest hangar we have installed is located at Doncaster airport and is a steel framed, fabric clad aviation structure, which measures 40m wide x 46m long and features a sliding door measuring 30m wide by 5m high. Additional modular buildings have been fitted to the right and rear of the building and include a number of offices and amenities. Rubb was tasked with ensuring the Rubb hangar connected effectively to the modular structures and that they were correctly positioned to allow a clear viewing area and access to the hangar. The project overall is a huge success and Rubb was pleased to have been involved with it.
Have you made any additions or improvements to your hangar structure range offering in the last year or two that you could discuss?
One huge addition to Rubb hangars is our patented Thermohall® cladding product, which has been used in our latest aviation hangar projects for Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport and EasyJet at Gatwick Airport. This is our latest insulated fabric cladding system, which provides many eco-friendly benefits, including reduced energy use and helping support a stable indoor temperature all year round. The technology features high density non-combustible glass wool insulation encapsulated within a heavy-duty PVC fabric, which is designed and manufactured in-house to suit site-specific project requirements. All materials are of the highest quality and meet regulations.
How would you summarise the market for the sort of hangar structures that Rubb supplies right now? Is there plenty of demand either for newly built hangars or to replace older hangars?
As the aviation industry is constantly changing, developing and growing we have seen a dramatic increase for our flexible and relocatable hangar systems. Airlines are increasing the overall size of their fleet of aircraft and with that comes additional maintenance operations. This, coupled with constant R&D within the industry, has brought the need for quality hangar space that can be manufactured and delivered in short time frames, which is what our types of structure offer.
Is the nature of the demand changing? Are customers looking for something in terms of hangars today that they weren’t a few years ago?
There have been significant changes of late, but mostly to do with the infrastructure of the aviation buildings, such as the requirement for offices and storage facilities within the hangar. This, and the constant requirement of trying to incorporate different types of aircraft under one roof, are the main trends. Every project is different and brings new challenges. The nature of the industry is constantly developing and that’s what makes it such an exciting sector to be involved in. Our alternative building solutions have adapted to support this over the years and continue to offer unique benefits to our end users.
What is it that would differentiate your hangar structures from those provided by other suppliers in this market? What is it that keeps customers coming back to you?
I would say the overall the quality of our products and the willingness to deliver the clients’ requirements in short time frames helps us stand out, but overall I personally feel that our enthusiasm and the fact we custom design and manufacture all of our products in the UK is a key driver in the repeat custom we have seen over the years.
What are the other key changes in the aviation market that have seen an increased demand for alternative ‘fabric’ hangar solutions?
Airlines and MRO outfits are increasingly looking for climate controlled, affordable and cost-effective MRO environments for their fleets. We find many aviation professionals and Head of Maintenance personnel are saying this is key to their aircraft running effectively and efficiently. A traditional hangar to accommodate a wide body aircraft could cost in excess of £7million. Once constructed this hangar is then stationary for its lifetime. There is now an increasing demand for more affordable, state-of-the-art, fabric hangar facilities, which provide the ideal environment for MRO activities. When investing this amount of money, clients are looking for the best life-time value from their hangar assets. A more affordable, adaptable, alternative solution to this would be a Rubb MRO hangar.
